Am I correct in thinking that the last two moves were:

5...Bb4
6.c3

If this is the case, then the problem comes more from the fact that 5...Bb4 was
played, rather than 5...Bg7. Why else would g6 have been played?

If you take back those two (theoretical) moves from the above position, there
are many games I have found that have that position in them, and in every game
Bg7 was played.
