I was having similar problems with Fritz 7, in that it was losing many
tournaments to Fritz 6 or Deep Fritz when I ran engine tournaments.
First off I am running a Hewlett Packard Pavilion 8370 350 MHz Pentium II
processor with the once 64 sdram upgraded to 384 sdram.
1.) I have been told that if you have the English version of Fritz 7 then your
engine is the 7,0,0,2 upgrade. The on line upgrade makes changes to the
interface only. If anyone knows otherwise, please mention it.
I upgraded on line, and saw no change in the engine file size or version number,
like the Fritz 6 service packs would do for Fritz 6.
2.) It was suggested to me that I should up the Hash Tables if I have enough
ram. I always set the Hash Tables at perhaps 16-32 MB, sometimes higher. I found
that Deep Fritz ran very well with 32 MB Hash Tables.
In the most recent 5 minute Blitz tournament that I ran before trying to set
the Hash Tables higher for Fritz 7, Fritz 7 lost badly to Fritz 7 and Deep
Fritz.
This time I ran a 5 minute tournament with Fritz 7 set at 128 MB Hash Tables vs
Fritz 6 with 16 MB Hash and Deep Fritz with 32 MB Hash.
To my suprise the outcome was very different.
You'd think that 128 MB Hash would be much too high for a 5 minute (no
increments) speed game.
The tournament with Permanent Brain Turned Off. Book Learning turned on, was 20
game each Round Robin.
Here are the results:

Fritz 7a ******** 14.0-6.0 13.5-6.5 27.5/40
Deep Fritz 6.0-14.0 ******** 13.5-6.5 19.5/40
Fritz 6 6.5-13.5 6.5-13.5 ******** 13.0/40
Maybe this is a fluke with such highly set Hash Tables for Fritz 7.
Perhaps someone out there has had a similar result, or will after trying with
Fritz 7a set with High Hash Tables.
You must have lots of RAM for such a high Hash setting.
When I only had the original 64 SDRAM on my computer, Fritz 6 would SWAP like
crazy with only a 32 MB Hash SETTING. So any out there should have HIGHER RAM
before such a HIGH SETTING. (For any out there that were not aware of
this.)Forgive me for mentioning this. It seems that most of the contributors on
this site are Computer Experts, but some only have limited knowledge.
I would love to hear any feedback on Fritz 7 engine tournaments.
