Sure, you can make a certian subset of array bounds checking work. Since you're in C++ why don't you make a new type, and overload [] to do bounds checking? Then you could turn it off when you want speed. It won't work if you make a template type that has [] because passing the class around will always be unboxed, but maybe you could change the type of IntArray to be int* in "fast" compiles.
