Intel has been playing catchup since the introduction of the Athlon. The last PIII core was on par with the 'stone age' tech classical Athlon. Using all the cutting edge technologies at Intels disposal. Now they have parity. Not one to one equality, but rather a tit for tat. >"catch up", as the new design is from Intel, not from AMD, and while the P4 can >be stretched a lot further in performance, the current AMD generation can't. Well, thats correct. The opposite was true two weeks ago. The current Athlon design won't scale much higher. XP 2200+ or so. But the currently sampling core will. And that core and the coming one will be close to the top P4, barring unforseen circumstances. And then the next generation will unfold. I am constantly in awe of the AMD engineering staff. The CPU designs from the K6 and forward are exquisit masterpieces. Not that the Intel engineers are bad. There are lots of interesting designs. But they are arguably inelegant and wasteful. IMO, the two major beauties of contemporary CPU designs are the K6 and the ARM. If you are interested there is an absolutely beautiful book called: 'The Anatomy of a High-Performance Microprocessor: A Systems Perspective' by Shriver and Smith. Its about the design of the K6 core. MvH Dan Andersson
