Hey Frank, There are two things to note about the Chessbase WinBoard support. First of all it's not very well executed given the number of (presumably) competent employees and furthermore few serious attempts have been made to improve it. Secondly, that the quality, or lack thereof, haven't been disclosed to those who tried adapting their engine to the specifications and the illusion of compatability propagated to the public. All in all it is not a great loss. And since I'm a firm believer in all or nothing, almost any step that removes the current imperfect solution is preferable. With that statement under the belt, it does offend me ethically that Chessbase will get away with homage to incompetence virtually unscathed. Not to mention taking advantage of the amateur endeavours, which UCI is an attempt to revitalize. But it's a personal opinion and not an encouragement for boycotting whatever plans they may or may not have. It boils down to author management of his or her own chess engine. If the author in question nurtures no grudge against CB and has (more or less realistic) ambitions to compete against the best, then so be it. I merely hope that memories of past experiences aren't erased completely. In short. I can't encourage a boycott despite my opinions about the company in question. WinBoard will survive with or without Chessbase and with or without UCI. That's just my humble opinion. Regards, Mogens
