Neither of these approaches could possibly work in all situations. The amount of
special cases are too many to handle them all, and there are no one set of
values that will work in all situations. The only approach I have ever seen work
(I don't claim to have seen them all) is expressing material in terms of other
factors on the board and it seems to correct itself and give correct evaluation
of material.
