His program was champion. On the other hand, most world computer chess champion programs were not written by people who were chess experts. Bottvinik was rumored to have been working on a chess program. It appears that nothing ever came of it. I think if he *had* come up with a world-beater, it would have been used to bludgeon the rest of the world in competitions.
