bsf stands for (I believe) bit scan forward. It's pretty much an assembly instruction that does exactly what this function sets out to do, only for 32 bit numbers instead of 64 bit ones, hence the little register dance. x86 chips are lucky enough to have this instruction. Many other chips don't. -Tom
