I read in several newgroups that ChessBase is migrating to the UCI protocol, that the WinBoard adapter disappears and WinBoard support in general may disappear as well. If this be true ChessBase is really burning the bridges behind them and it would also be very stupid from the commercial point of view. What if your favorite WinBoard engine does not support the UCI protocol ? ChessBase will lose an important market share by unsupporting WinBoard. There are comparatively only few players on their chess server, sometimes it takes long to find a suitable opponent / friend and if ChessBase want more people to play on their chess server, they just need to offer a free interface to connect to their chess server. I often disconnect without having played a single game for want of an opponent. Also, they could offer the option to enter your friend's E mail to invite / challenge on the ChessBase server or run their own native engines on their chess server as freely available opponents to all comers.
