Hi

'perft' is a command in Crafty (and other engines) which makes the engine count
all valid positions to a specified depth. No score or best line is calculated,
just the full game tree is spawned and counted. eg. for the initial position (20
positions for ply=1, 400 for ply=2, etc)

You can use this for:

(a) test your movegen/domove/undomove
(b) compare speed of your movegen/domove/undomove with other engines

I've tested the move generator of my engine with the initial position (6 plies
deep) and the oh so famous kiwipete-position (5 plies) For the
kiwipete-position, finger kiwipete in ICC. [position and #positions for 1..5
plies are in his finger-notes]
