Frank,

You may have posted your question to the wrong forum.

Anyhow, I suggest getting NCO. I suggest also analyzing the openings of your
tournament games with Fritz 6 or 7.

The problem you are facing - that everyone faces - is that opening theory is
vast. I memorized over 200 opening lines - it took me over 2 years - and I had
to keep a memorization review list so that I wouldn't forget them. Still there
are tons of opening lines that I still could learn. If you want to see some of
my opening lines then go to

My best advice is to specialize in off beat lines. Keep in the mind what you
are up against: If you want to play against all Sicilian variations then you
might have to know 40 lines. If you play the Alapin against the Sicilian then
you only need to know 7. If you play the closed Sicilian or the king's Indian
attack then you need to know 1 to 3. Likewise if you play the English you
might only need to know 5 to 10 lines against all possible black responses
combined. Instead playing king pawn means more knowledge is required.

Playing 1. b4 or 1. g4 on the first move, even though they might not be great
openings, means that you only have to know 1 to 3 lines.

Much depends upon where you are going. I am trying to get to Expert and then
Master so I need to know more theory than your typical C player. But the
typical C player is not going to beat me if he allows me to play the openings
that I know. My Sicilian dragon is a killer against everyone under 2000.
