What he is saying is you need to throw out real world competition. I made some simple modifications to the latest version of crafty that I thought were helping it a lot on FICS. Testing against normal/modified versions showed they were about the same, but testing against yace/little goliath/etc showed that it was stronger. One thing you could do is put a few other programs in there...
