If it could be fully automated (e.g. just leave Beowulf up with the appropriate "match" command) then it might be possible. I think things are even worse for Colin (ISP has expensive phone connections, for example) and he's a PHd student who is even busier than I am. I'd probably put more energy into it if I was positive that Beowulf would win. I used to run road races (5 mile runs, 10K runs, stuff like that). I usually did not place higher than 5th-3rd, but I always thought I had a very, very good chance to win. When I stopped feeling I could win, I stopped running them. When you get right down to it, Beowulf is really Colin's engine. I have done some work on it, but I have done a similar amount of work on at least a dozen other engines. He's just being a nice guy by letting me tag my name on it. I do have one that I work on, but it isn't practical for today's hardware requirements yet (would need _at least_ 4 cpu's and 2 gigs of ram as a bare minimum). It also gets dissected regularly and any progress is slow. So, maybe someday I will compete.
