multiedit is doing a good job here you can define all
colors in an EASY way.

if you run under linux and use emacs you can get some
colors with

esc-x global-font-lock-mode

However that's only for say a few minutes of editting, after that
it is too limited and you need more.

there are also commercial things for linux with automatic checkin and
checkout to the database like vslick, but IMHO they are not near
the level of multiedit.
