That happened because it took your program 25 seconds after it was started before it began sending feature commands to WinBoard. WinBoard waits only 10 seconds for the engine to send feature commands, then gives up and assumes this may be a protocol version 1 engine that does not send feature commands. If your program takes a long time to initialize itself, have it send "feature done=0" immediately when it starts up, before it begins doing the time-consuming initialization. Then WinBoard will wait until you send "feature done=1" as your last feature command before starting any games.
