Subject: Deep Blue test for your favorite program

Author: K. Burcham

Date: 21:29:04 01/30/02

here is a line played by Deep Blue and Kasparov, in game two.
(21.Qe2 Qd8 22.b4 Qc7 23.Rec1 c4 24.Ra3 Rec8 25.Rca1 Qd8 26.f4 Nf6)

below you will find the logs for Deep Blue for move 24. and 25., also included
is the target move 26.f4.
notice the final search line in the log for move 24. in this line you will
notice Deep Blue finds pf2f4, at depth 11(6). this is the move Deep Blue plays
for move 26.
If I read the logs correctly, Deep Blue starts "thinking", out of book when
Kasparov plays 17...Ng6.

clock at move 17. 113 minutes
clock at move 25. 89 minutes
so from the time Deep Blue started its search, until the time it found
  the f4 move 113-89=24 24 minutes.
(of course we know it wasnt looking for this line with f4 the whole 24 minutes)
that is 8 or 9 moves that Deep Blue played in this 24 minutes.
however you choose to divide this time, lets just say we cut this time in half,
and give your program 12 minutes to find f4. that should be fair.

but really, most should start this test at night---and check it in the morning,
or some check it when you come back from a two week vacation.
some will find it, some wont. one program does real well.
some see it but dont play it. one of the top programs wont play it at all.
but it seems most all programs, if given enough time will find f4.
how long does your favorite program take to find the line or move?
