You are definitely right, 43.Kg4 is a rather brilliant move and after 42.g5!
hxg5 43. Kg4! Averno would have won. I am convinced that neither 43. h6 nor 43.
f6 are sufficient.
A good,correct and difficult testposition IMHO.
I challenged Crafty 18.13. on an Athlon1333 to play it out in a 30 10 game - it
accepted :-). I think at least after move 6 it is already trivial.
