Actually, it's not an assignment, and I think I'm going to take the advice of the first response which is to use winboard and then spend more time and energy making a better engine. Also winboard will make it easier for me to test the engine's strength on internet chess servers. If anybody knows of site that will test an engine's strength (or strengths at different handicap levels) please let me know. Thanks to all who posted, Casey Camp
