Lets assume that there are an average of 38 moves per side, then with each
deeper ply you are searching 38 times more moves, so you case of 6-5 being only
20% is way off the mark. In the example that I quated the amount of playing
strength got smaller with deeper plys, but in the depts of 4 to 10 or so the
gain was significant. As a matter of fact, most of the top programs experience
only a very small amount of elo points with eash new release, but faster
machines can account for almost the same improvement levels too.
It is a very complex question, but facts are facts, ask anyone who has written a
program to play chess.
