There are som many stupid things that affect the final speed of a program that nowadays I only believe my own judgement. If I make a modification which _should_ be faster and my program runs slower (and the profiler shows whatever) I will use the modification and hopefully later on when I modify the code more, these misalignement/scheduling/pipeing/zipping/zapping problems will fade away...
