You are assuming that all chess engines will support Winboard primarily and then
UCI has a second option. Take the recent Monarch, it supports UCI 100% and
winboard protocol only partially.

Seems to be designed for engine matches, but still it's not too bad for
analyzing game, at least compared to winboard/
