Make sure you use a - bootable - disk you transfered the sys files onto. IIRC, this could be done by "format a: /sys" or similar, or by "sys a:" or something like that (I'm at an WindowsME system at the moment, which doesn't have that options anymore, so I don't know the exact syntax at the moment). Note: The following examples are intended for Windows98, *not* for WindowsME. I made that configuration for Mchess Pro 7.1. Mchess was always a bit difficult to configure for, because it needed much free memory and OTOH many resident dos drivers, i.e. when it wanted to check the CD. For other chess programs performances, it may be better to remove emm386.exe, or even himem.sys. This depends on the program and requires a bit experimenting. (These are not the simplest examples, but I didn't change anything... of course, everything individual must be edited, pathes etc.) *** config.sys *** [menu] menucolor=14,0 menudefault=dos_cd,2 menuitem= dos_cd, Konfiguration fr MChess Pro 7.1 [common] DEVICE=E:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /testmem:off /shadowram:on DEVICE=E:\WINDOWS\setver.exe DOS=UMB,HIGH FILES=40 REM *** FCBS=16 SWITCHES=/F SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM C:\ /E:1024 /P LASTDRIVE=G [dos_cd] DEVICE=E:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS D=128 I=B000-B7FF I=E000-EFFF DEVICEHIGH=C:\CD-ROM\AOATAPI.sys /D:MSCD001 *** autoexec.bat *** @ECHO OFF PROMPT $p$g PATH E:\WINDOWS;E:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:\DOS;C:\DOS\BATCH;..
