IE if you play NxN and you have 5 pieces left, you probe. If you get a hit, you are done. If you don't, you do not want to keep probing since you obviously don't have the table for this combination of pieces. 2. you probably will want to limit the depth you probe the tables so that you don't probe so far out in the tree that you kill your overall performance and lose games due to missing tactical shots that your opponent sees because he isn't probing at all. You will have to tune this for your engine and hardware.
