Uri,

Playing a game under Winboard isn't the only thing I use Winboard engines for.
Have you ever looked at the free chess database Scid
(http://scid.sourceforge.net)? Winboard engines can be used as analysis engines
in Scid, just like you can use Fritz as an analysis engine in Chessbase. I know
from experience (and from looking at the Scid source code!) that engines that
implement the "protover 2" command and the "feature analyze=1" response to that
command (if your engine supports analysis mode, that is) work the best with
Scid. Other engines can work with Scid, but they often don't work well or
seamlessly with Scid.

With other Winboard-compatible applications such as Scid and Arena gaining
usershare and mindshare out there, why wouldn't you want to implement the WB
protocol 2 feature set? Using the WB protocol 1 feature set is a quick way to
get your engine working for Winboard play, but it ultimately limits uses of your
engine beyond Winboard.

My $0.02US,

Allen
