The actual fact of the matter is that there is a LOT of reasearch done in Japan
and other asian countries that don't have ANY interest in chess. But, otoh I am
surprised that Go engines don't use some of the stuff that chess engines use
today (large hash tables, and stuff like that). I have Many Faces of Go 10
Deluxe and I can beat it on the hardest setting giving it a 9 stone handicap
(not 100% of the time, if I get carless it does surprise me occassionally).

On the 9x9 board, they signifanctly better though, but still, they are quite
weak. The estimated rating is about 200 points TOO HIGH actually, since my
actual Go strength is about 1800ish. :)
