XP is a good system, because it has done a clean breakaway from all sorts of bad
backward compatibility (in the driver model etc.). But some programs doesn't run
well on XP without changes. This problems should disappear with time, but right
now, there are still problems.

If XP is not able to run your favorite program, run Windows 2000 instead. It is
the most stable OS Microsoft has ever made (possibly with the exception of XP,
we don't know yet). It is as stable as any Linux distribution in my experience,
although bad drivers and bad software (such as Microsofts own Internet
Information Server) are giving the OS an unfairly bad reputation in Linux
circles. Windows 2000 is light years ahead of Windows 98, which is just a toy OS
in my opinion.
