The maximum size of the transposition tables is strictly based on how much FREE memory your machine has at the time you set them. Because of our "typical user", we make sure that you can't hose your machine by accidentally using a setting that will cause your computer to thrash. If you have 256MB of RAM, you should be able to set the hash tables at 128MB. jm
