I just want to put in a few line about this ponder issue and strength.
All engines that are listed are quite strong engines for the normal user and
thereby are used mainly as analyse engines when configured at max strength. A
ponder off tournament would say just as much if not more about the engines
strength to analyse.
Another thing that could hide the engines analyse strength is the use of
learning in match play between computers. It could be fun to see some result
from matches where each engine has two entries, one with and one without
learning. Or maybe repeat some SSDF matches where the learning of the engine in
question was turned off to get an estimate how much of the rating comes from the
GUI. Maybe it is tree people that should be listed as author:
GUI-author/Engine-author/EGTB-author.
How would the book learning affect the opening choice when the program is mainly
used for human-computer games? Wouldn’t it be rather boring to play it after
some games when the program starts playing the same opening over and over again?
I would add that I sometimes use The King and Chess Tiger to analyse intricate
opening problems. The King (and also Gambit Tiger) is very nice to use to find
complication in positions. And Chess Tiger is the man to display if this
complication could only be used when you must win the game. In short time I will
also receive Shredder 6 to help CT in those position and maybe also help when
the position is of a positional nature.
