Game 2 Loek van Wely vs Rebel Century 4.0 Wednesday February 20, 2002

Analysis of the endgame of game 1 has been added.

Game 2 Maastricht February 20, 2002

Loek van Wely - Rebel Century 4.0

1. d4 Nf6 2. c3

Does Loek want to play an anti-computer system ?

2...e6 3. Bg5 h6 4. Bh4 b6 5. Nd2 Bb7 6. e3 Be7 7. Ngf3 c5 8. Bd3 0-0 9. Qe2 d5

White plays the Colle. Black answers quitly. The position is known from Tal -
Kliavinsh, Riga 1954.

10. Ne5 Nc6 11. f4 Ne4 12. Bg3!?

Van Wely invites Black to exchange unfavourably.

12...Nxg3?!

Black opens the h-file. More prudent is 12...Nxe5 13. dxe5 Nxd2 14. Qxd2 c4 15.
Bc2 f5.

13. hxg3 Rc8?!

An important attacker is exchanged by 13...Nxe5 14. dxe5. Thereafter 14...d4 15.
exd4 cxd4 starts the useful counter-attack in the centre.

14. Ndf3 Bd6?

Necessary is 14...Nxe5.

15. g4! f6 16. Ng6 Rf7 17. g5 Rcc7!? 18. gxh6 gxh6 19. Rxh6

A nice alternative is 19. Rh5. White postpones the capture and continues the
attack on the king.

19... Rh7 20. Rxh7 Rxh7 21. 0-0-0 c4 22. Bc2 Qe8!?

23. g4

Even worse for black is 23. e4! Qxg6? 24.e5!

23...Rh6 24. Nfh4 Rh7 25. Qg2 Nd8 26. Rh1 b5 27. Nf3 Rxh1 28. Qxh1 Nf7 29. Qh5
Qd7 30. Ngh4
