I agree 100% with what you said. If people want to remember random things, they might just as well play one of the many free variations of the game "Concentration" that are available for every platform (PC, Mac, Palm, PPC). Remembering real chess positions involves taking note of chess-related patterns and (pawn) structures! It's THIS memory skill that is notably greater in strong players than in weak players.
