Subject: A closer look to Excalibur LCD Computer Chess

Author: Didzis Cirulis

Hi,

It is not a bad... toy. As expected. All serious games, no takebacks or hints,
have ended with my win. 6-0 this far.
The limited search depth causes incredibly horrible moves, some of which are
shown later in this message.

LCD: Level 72
     "Fast" indicates the fast mode.

A quote from Chris Kantack:

"LCD Chess uses a very small 4 bit processor that runs at 6 MHz. It has only
256 bytes of RAM and 16K bytes of ROM.

It's search depth is typically around 3 to 4 ply. Beyond 4 ply it cannot
search very efficiently.

Fast mode does a more selective style search rather than a pure "brute
force" approach. It may look a bit more deeply in Fast mode but it could
make some tactical errors. Ron Nelson, (the programmer of LCD Chess)
always recommends leaving Fast off if doing computer vs. computer games."

Some of blunders:

[D]8/8/R7/4p3/1k4P1/4K3/1P5r/8 b - - 0 37

Program should avoid taking on b2. Kc7 played instead after 9:27 minutes.

[D]r1br3k/pp3ppB/2p4p/2P4q/6n1/4B1P1/PPQ2P1P/R4RK1 w - - 0 21

Blunder move h3 not avoided in 10 minutes

[D]r2r3k/pp3pp1/2p4p/2P2b2/Q3B1n1/4B1Pq/PP3P2/R3R1K1 w - - 0 25

Blunder move is Bxf5. Mate in 4. Not avoided in 10 minutes.

[D]2rqr1k1/pp3ppp/3p4/1b1Np1b1/4P2P/1B3Q2/PPP2PP1/3RK2R b K h3 0 16

Blunder move is Bxh4. Not avoided in 10 minutes.

[D]2rqr1k1/pp3p1p/3p4/1b1Np1pQ/4P2P/1BP5/PP3P2/3RK2R b K - 0 20

Blunder is gh. Pawn to g4 would be a better move. Not found in 10 minutes.

In these positions LCD chess cannot go deeper that 6 ply (or 7 in the first one)
and this is not enough.

I wish I had this LCD Chess exactly as it is, all functions, screen, price ;-)
etc., but playing at level of 2200 FIDE ...

Have a great chess!
