Way back in version 3, someone made a GUI version. Usually, you just use
Winboard.

Hard to say, since it is very new. At game in 5 minutes, here is a small
crosstable from some games that I ran to get a rough feel:

Program Elo + - Games Score Av.Op. Draws
  1 Sjeng 12.9 : 2327 78 73 75 53.3 % 2303 16.0 %
  2 GNU Chess 5.03 : 2303 29 25 555 51.0 % 2297 18.0 %
  3 GNUChess-414 : 2292 27 31 480 48.3 % 2303 18.3 %

As you can see, it is about the same strength as GnuChess 4 (which is an
improvement, since GnuChess 4 was definitely stronger than GnuChess 5.00).

Crafty is the only free engine that has been tested by the SSDF.
