The problem with the traditional piece values of (9,5,3,3,1) is that it becomes impossible to give the bishop a little bit more weight than the knight; for instance, to give the bishop a 4 would be a terrible mistake in comparison to the pawn's value and it doesn't represent the bishop in proportion to the knight.
