The newest version of Morpheus is completely new. The software has been written to rely on the Gnutella network now. Previously, Morpheus, KaZaa, and Grokster all used the same P2P protocol, created by FastStream, a Dutch company. Someone with KaZaa could pull files from someone with KaZaa. However, with the new Morpheus, this is not possible anymore. Morpheus users are now split off from KaZaa users. MusicCity, the company which distributes Morpheus in the US, has been sued by the RIAA and MPAA for copyright violations. Their move to a Gnutella-based P2P protocol is an attempt to create a completely self-organizing P2P network that cannot be shut down as Napster was by Federal Court order. Whether the new Morpheus software is superior to the old software remains to be seen. Gnutella has always had problems scaling to many users. Perhaps the engineers at MusicCity have overcome these limitations, however. We will see.
