From the consumer's point of view, it seems to me the ideal scenario would be to have a generic "chess processor board" that you could buy and install in your PC. Then each piece of software would simply check to see if the board was installed, and if it was use it. That would remove the competitive advantage from individual programs, but it would lead to a significant step forward for all programs, and would also perhaps provide sufficient volume to allow the boards to be sold quite cheaply.
