After all, in his day they may have had a lot less theory and positional understanding to go by, but tactical calculating ability was probably just as high as in Tal's day or today (i.e., nearing the limits of the human brain). Also, didn't Tal repeatedly have difficulty against Korchnoi? I don't know whether that was because Korchnoi calculated even more accurately or for some other reason, but I don't know that Tal calculated any more accurately than other top GMs (Fischer, Petrosian, Korchnoi, Spassky, etc.). He did, however, take more risky ventures into incalculable territory than most, IMHO.
