Like I said, the only way for ANY line to be considered better than Nxg6 is if
it is better than Rebel's line Nxg6 hxg6 Qh6 Be6 Rd3 Bc1. As you showed, Crafty
thinks the resulting position after Bc1 is lost for Black.
16-> 8:29 1.84 4. Qxc1 Bxb3 5. axb3 Qe6 6. Qd1 Rb8
7. Rd6 Qe8 8. Bc5 Rd8 9. Rd5 Kg7 10.
b4 f6 11. Bd6 Ne7 12. Rd3
I have no doubts, but there will still be the matter of converting the win, so
it remains Black's best defense. As to Nxg6 hxg6 Qh6 Be6 Rd3 f5? it loses
forcibly and I think my last line given in response to Ed was enough. I'm pretty
sure that after the last move Rebel's eval went through the roof in White's
favor. Note that Crafty never considers the superior Rg3! Rf6 Rh3 and goes
straight for Rh3.
14-> 9:28 0.80 3. ... f5 4. Rh3 Kf7 5. Qh7+ Kf6 6.
Qh4+ Kg7 7. Bxe6 Qxe6 8. exf5 Qg8 9.
Qh6+ Kf7 10. fxg6+ Ke7 11. Qg5+ Ke6
12. Qg4+ Ke7 13. Rd3 Rf6 14. Rd7+ Kf8
It's no criticism of Crafty as the lines are very complicated and very deep, but
then again, that was the whole reason I posted finding all this as a challenge.
If they could all see it in a minute, it would be much of a challenge, would it.
:-)
14-> 9:28 0.80 3. ... f5 4. Rh3 Kf7 5. Qh7+ Kf6 6.
Qh4+ Kg7 7. Bxe6 Qxe6 8. exf5 Qg8 9.
Qh6+ Kf7 10. fxg6+ Ke7 11. Qg5+ Ke6
12. Qg4+ Ke7 13. Rd3 Rf6 14. Rd7+ Kf8
I'll reiterate one main line after 3...f5:
1. Nxg6 hxg6 2. Qh6 Be6 3. Rd3 f5 4. Rg3 Rf6 5. Rh3 Kf7 6. Qh7+ Kf8 7. exf5 Bxb3
8. axb3 Ne7 9. Qh8+ Ng8 10. b4 Qf7 11. Bc5+ Ke8 12. Rh7 Qd5 (or some other Q
move) 12. h4
>Which is better? f5 or Bc1? Do either save the position?
Bc1 is better, as it prolongs the struggle, but either way Black is lost.
