Hi Bruce, seems people have very different evaluations of different situations. I remember we (and others) were worlds apart discussing the acceptance of defaming posts a while ago. I then after rethinking accepted we just had very different perspectives on how to react to that. It is really not my intention to jump in now because we happen to differ again. We sure would find a lot of things where we agree. It's just that I perceive Ed's (or anybody else's) posts about new program versions not as disturbing in any way at all. They would disturb me, if they contained some agressive or comparative forms of advertising. I see nothing of this kind, neither from Ed nor from others. On the other hand I am very curious concerning new program versions, new events played with new versions and so on. These things together with test positions, nice games and personal exchange and fun are the only reasons why I still read and (from time to time ) write here, being no prigrammer and having only very poor understanding of the more technical aspects of computer chess. So I contradict your evaluation not to provoke you, but to utter my personal kinds of interests in keeping contact to such a newsgroup. Last not least I would *not* appreciate infos about new programs and their programmers to be labelled "commercial" or similar at all. The reason is simply that I am adult and reasonable enough to see and decide myself from the *content* of a post what I would regard as "commercial" (namely what I wrote above about agressive forms of advertising) or just interesting news. The problem is: your and my and others' perception obviously differs widely concerning this again. So I propose we don't struggle about the point or about possible naming conventions as long as we don't agree that we have to deal with excessive advertising (as sometimes seen in newsgroups). There are limits to everything, but I don't see a problem up to now. Kind regards from Dirk
