The description of Rebel 10's "Smart setting" from your homepage, Ed looks promising. Even when I've experimented with Rebel 8 I've noticed that changing the parameters (play style, selectivity) can have a noticable effect on how quickly a ploblem can be solved. As an example, usually I found that a selectivity set lower (3,4 or 5) worked better in endgames. Rebel does recognize patterns such as king safety(as revealed in the teaching feature) and when an endgame has arrived. So I'm wondering if these and other patterns are "recognized" that the program should be able to adapt its play style, selectivty and other parameters accordingly. Us humans attempt this by adjusting our own style during a game. Sometimes we toss all our knowledge out the window so as to simply calculate deeper. Other times we must draw on knowledge to guide us to a reasonable move. One thinking cap for closed positions and another cap for open ones (for those readers of deBono) is another way of expressing my thoughts on this. This is my guess as to what the "Smart" feature of the new Rebel is.
