         Depends how keen you are. It's normal to be willing to pay for
 ICC while you are obsessed with the game. You can watch GM's play, it's
 quite interesting. And of course, ICC's Blitzin interface is streets
 ahead of the others. But once the enthusiasm has worn off, and you just
 want the occasional recreational game, FICS is fine.
   This has been the case with me.
