I have a SoundBlaster AWE64, and it can allow only one program to "take control" of it at a time. Chessmaster, on startup, tries to initialize the sound card, but if another program already has it (like Windows Media Player, WinAmp, etc.), then it cannot initialize, so the program fails. I hate this too, but it is unavoidable on those older sound cards. You MIGHT try updating your sound card's drivers.... jm
