BTW, there can easily be more than 16 possible moves that are captures if you construct the right position. There can be a lot more in fact, depending on how your program works. A pawn promotion might generate many moves if you encode the piece being promoted to in the move. A single pawn on the 7th rank, not itself blocked from promoting but forking two of the opponent's pieces, could generate 12 capture moves all by itself. -- Paul
