Most people here consider GM Gulko a weak player, simple because of his Fide rating of only 2602. But what most of us here don't even consider is that GM Gulko has faced stronger opponents than GM Van Vely such as Kasparov and even have a better record against Kasparov than most 2700 rated players. Now against Computers, lets simply forget the fact that Gulko beat Deep Thought in 1989, and lets consider only his latest match against four of the top best programs excluding Chess Tiger and Rebel Century 4, which could be aproximately the same level playing GM than these four programs. I Know that there would be plenty of people here on ICC that will argue this until midnight , but if we match GM Van Wely against Deep Junior in G/60 Plus 10 sec per move, I don't think that he would have scored better than GM Gulko.
