I cannot comment on the security issues, as I just have no experience here. But, based on the *official* bugtrack statistics, there is comparable number of the expoisable bugs in both OSes, Windows is slightly better here (sorry, don't have link with me at home). Most recent Windows attacks actually exploited Windows *users*, not system "per se". And if you want you can get access to the Windows source code. For details look, for example, at http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/sharedsource/default.asp. Faculty, staff, and students in more than 120 academic institutions throughout the world have such the access.
