I think that those bugtraq stats are somewhat misleading, for two reasons:

(1) They seem to count a problem with Linux as several problems: if RedHat,
SuSE and Mandrake all address the same security problem with a patch, bugtraq
*seems* to count that as three problems.

(2) They seem to count security-related patches to *distributions* as the same
as security-related patches to OS components. My SuSE distribution comes on a
six CDs (I also get a DVD with the same stuff on it). That's over 3GB of
applications. Bugtraq has been known to count security-related patches to
those *applications* as security bugs, in the same way that it counts
security-related patches to Windows.

AFAIK, there's nothing "official" about bugtraq, except in their own terms.

PS How do you distinguish between an attack on a user and an attack on a system?
