Mr. Marsland was one of the pioneers of computer chess. He wrote a program "The Marsland Program" that competed in the first U.S. computer championships in New York, 1970. It ran on a Burroughs mainframe, but had a bug that caused it to select a move that was far less than optimal. To add embarrassment to frustration beyond belief, the New York Times published his program's game, as the "chess computer loses game in king-size blunder". In the game, because of the bug, he had lost all his pieces by about the tenth move. I don't know what he's done since. Dave
