I think it is only risky if he can be compared badly to one of his competitors. For instance, say that Fritz beats some GM by 1.5 to 0.5, and then Rebel loses by 0.0 to 2.0, then he'd be in some trouble. Unrealistically, actually. Different players have different strengths and weaknesses, they play more or less well against various computers at various time controls, the computer may be lucky or unlucky, etc. Actually perhaps the public is a little more forgiving than this. Here is another example. Some time ago we had Hiarcs vs Hergott, and Hiarcs won. I don't think this was a foregone conclusion, I think an IM would be at an advantage in a 6-game match at normal time controls. I have an IM who would be willing to do another match. But if I offered up my own program in order to test this, and it lost the match, people would see this not as evidence that IM's are better than micros when they feel like playing, but rather as evidence that Hiarcs is a lot better than my program. So from my point of view, it would be very dangerous for me to do this match. So in order to do this, I have to find another program the the public perceives is better than or equal to Hiarcs, and mine isn't in this category, nobody knows how good my program is. Probably I need to use Rebel or Fritz instead. I have an IM, and I have a nice computer and some good programs, but what I need is a sponsor, and that's harder to get. bruce
