Mark, If you're serious about creating a strong engine then you probably should go for either C/C++ or Delphi. I prefer Delphi and have used it to write Monarch. I would recommend Delphi if you're just wanting to do Computer Chess as a hobby - if you're wanting to learn programming and make it a career out of it then there are more jobs programming 'C'. The reason I like Delphi is it's an easier language to learn (Pascal like language), it's fast (no more than 20% slower than C IMO) and it has all of the data types you will find useful such as 64 bit integers. You can find more info and a downloadable compiler at www.borland.com Regards, Steve
