Hi! >Was there really a program for a handheld calculator that played 100% legal >chess? It was :-) (the only rule it didn't managed was the under promotion) You can find a screen copy at: http://home.worldnet.fr/~fzibi/hp48/hpchess.htm The engine itself (16 KBytes) was in Saturn Assembly (a 4 bit processor), the chip used in the Hp28 / Hp48 calculator. Even with a very simple (mainly static) evaluation, it was running at the outstanding speed of ... 50 nodes per second ! BTW, instead of using a Quiescence Search, I preferred to use an 'enhanced' Static Exchange Evaluator, so it was not doing very well in tactics... Among its features : => Opening Book of 2000 moves => Several levels (blitz, 1 Hour KO, etc...) => Resign feature => Take Back => Save and Load Games => Possibility to set up a position and to review a game => Of course no EndGame TableBase were used to improve its play ;-) Its strength was around 1200 elo (searching between 1 and 3 plies), even if I am convinced *now* that it was possible to make a much stronger engine (1700/1800 elo) for this calculator. Apart from this chess engine, other surprising projects were made for this calculator (mainly by students), including: => A HP48 version of the Civilization game. => (small) 3D Animations (take a look at http://home.worldnet.fr/~fzibi/hp48/animate.htm :-) => A TV Remote controller Regards.
