I thinks the argument is somewhat different:

Chess programs mostly test the CPU speed on integers while Q3 mostly of Floating
point. Both test memory. The second measures also 3D graphics.
Both are interesting measures of different aspects.

If you want a gaming machine Q3 is a better test, if you wont a business machine
a chess test is way better.

They key point is that Q3 tests are done to compare features that other well
known tests  don't (they test intergers and 2D graphics), i.e. there are plenty
of other tests that explore the perfromance tested by any chess test.
